Choosing the Right Pot for Your Indoor Plants
Houseplants are a great thing to have inside your home. They are living, which introduces color, texture, and warmth. Plus, you can use plants to soften the transition between your spaces.
Of course, plants can also be a focal point for a room. They also soak up excess carbon dioxide and make the air a bit healthier to breathe. Therefore, you should put your plants in the right pot to enhance growth, keep them healthy, and have them work hard as an accent.
Choose the Right Size Pot for Indoor Plant
When your pot is too big, the soil dries too slowly. Therefore, the plant is highly susceptible to rotting roots. When your plant is too big for the pot, it could tip over and not get enough nutrients.
In a too-small pot, the soil dries too fast. This means you’ve got to water it constantly. Also, the plant can become root-bound, which stunts its growth.
Ideally, you want to put your plant into a pot about the same size that it is in right now. If you are transplanting your flowers because it is too big for its current pot, use one that is about two or four inches bigger (diameter).
Go bigger (four inches) when the plant grows very fast. Slow growers only need about two extra inches of space at a time.
What Is the Best Material for Plant Pots?
The two popular pot materials include terra cotta and plastic. Plastic options are lightweight, inexpensive, and colorful. They also retain more water, which means less watering.
Plastic works well for hanging baskets and wall shelf plants. You don’t want the extra weight in these situations.
Terra cotta is much heavier, costs more, and offers more beautiful patterns. However, they are porous, so you may be watering a lot more often. This works well for plants that need more aeration and dry soil, such as orchids, cacti, and succulents.
Does Your Plant Need Drainage Holes?
In most cases, plants don’t do well in standing water. Therefore, the pot you pick should have at least one drainage hole in the bottom. Water can easily escape out of it while air is allowed inside.
Sometimes, you might want a pot without holes to make it more decorative. If that’s the case, you need a cachepot.
This holds the pot in which your plant grows and is often the pretty part. Then, you can use a regular terra cotta or plastic container to actually house the flower.
This technique can also be called ‘double potting’. The cachepot doesn’t require holes, but it needs to be big enough to hold the saucer and the pot in which the flower is growing.
With a cachepot technique, you can choose any container or material you prefer. This includes cookie jars, wicker baskets, metal boxes, and glass bowls.

How to Plant an Indoor Plant in a Pot?
When you bring home your plant, it is probably in a small container. This is for the protection of the roots until it is brought home. Now, you need to put it in its pot.
Make sure that the pot isn’t too big for the plant’s roots. You learned how to size your pot properly earlier. Water your plant a day or so before you transplant it. That way, it slides out of the container and is hydrated to prevent shock.
Remove the plant from the container. You may have to wiggle it just a bit to get the roots to come out without breaking them. It can also help to press gently on the sides of the container to loosen everything.
Loosen the root’s ball by shaking away any soil and gently spreading the roots without breaking them. Remove any damaged or black/brown roots with sharp scissors.
Add soil to the bottom so that the plant base (where it attaches to the root) is just peeking over the pot. Put more soil around it and gently pack it down. Water it lightly, and you are done!

Looking for q pot for a gardinea. My grandmother had a huge gardinea in her house. The outside pot was egg shaped with a large wire frame the planter sat down into. Inside the planter was a second planter with the plant in it. Every so often she would take the planter out with the plant and take the large out side holder and empty the drained water that collected at the bottom. She would then place the large egg shaped planter back in holder then place the holder with the plant inside the larger holder. Her plant was so large and had lots of flowers on that our local paper actually featured her plant in an articel. I am looking fot same kind of set up
