How to Plant and Grow Herbs in Pots?

Get Yourself the Right Pot

Choose your pot well before putting herbs in it. Smaller pots are great looking, but they may cause many problems for your growing herbs.

First, you should know that soil in small pots dries very quickly. That means you need to do watering more often than in larger pots. Smaller pots may also cause your herbs do not grow very much.

Choosing the right pots for herbs
Choosing the right Pots for Herbs

There is more space for herb roots in wider, deeper pots. Bigger pots also allow you to grow more than one herb together. You should ensure that your pot is at least sixteen inches wide and sixteen inches deep.

Make sure your pot has holes at the bottom for water to escape. You must make them it does not come with any.

Choose Your Herbs

Since you are planting more than one herb in your pot, you need to choose them well. That means you need to make sure that the herbs you put together have the same needs.

One idea is that you can put the ones that like a lot of water together. Some of these are:

  • Mint
  • Chervil
  • Coriander
  • Chives

In the same way, you can put the ones that don’t need so much water together. Some of these are:

  • Oregano
  • Thyme
  • Sage
  • Rosemary

Remember to buy herbs that get along well and plant them together. You should also get the herbs you cook with, so they are useful to you. This helps to keep you excited about planting them.

Choose Soil for Herbs

The soil you use is also very important to herb growth. Using the soil from outside is a bad idea.

You have no idea what is in it and parasites can kill your herbs. Also, water does not pass through it very well. It is best to go out and buy the best potting soil for herbs.

Setting up Your Pot

Now that you have all the pieces, it is time to get your soil ready. Begin by covering the holes in the bottom of the pot with some mesh. The mesh keeps the soil in and allows water to drain out.

Next, it is time to pour your soil into the pot. Fill up your pot with soil until it is three inches from the top. Pat the soil down and make it moist by adding some water.

The water may make the soil sink a bit so remember to add more if you need to.

Planting Your Herbs

With your soil ready, you can now start planting your herbs. Remember that you are putting more than one herb in the pot. So, do not start by planting anything in the middle.

Use the outer parts first. Look at your first herb and dig a hole that is just big enough for it. Try not to hold the stem of your herb and gently place it into the hole.

Cover the herb with an inch of soil. Repeat this for all your herbs until they are all planted. Try to put taller herbs in the middle and shorter herbs near the edges. You need to ensure that you leave space between the herbs, so their roots don’t get tangled.

Now it is time to water the herbs. Pour water until it starts to come out through the holes at the bottom. Once the draining is done, you can put the pot into a saucer. Don’t ever allow water to settle in the saucer. Empty it if water rests in it.

Taking Care of Your Herbs

After your herbs are planted, you need to take care of them, so they grow well. You should ensure that they get daily sunshine and they get watered as much as they need to. You can use things like bubble wrap to keep them safe during winter weather.

Pick them regularly so they make more shoots. This also means you get more for your meals. Finally, remember that not all herbs last for a long time. Some herbs must be replaced yearly.

Conclusion

Herbs can make a big difference at your dinner table. Planting them saves you money and gives you more to enjoy. It is not a hard task once you follow the steps above. Enjoy planting and enjoy eating as well.
